Volunteer Opportunties
The PTA runs on volunteers. There are many ways to be involved. Some responsibilities take a real time commitment, some take very little time. Many provide opportunities for networking and learning new skills. Of course you can volunteer without being a PTA member, but being a member helps to keep you informed. Find out more below!
Background checks
Volunteers who work directly with students (in classrooms, on field trips, etc.) must get a background check (BCI-FBI) through the CH-UH school district before beginning the assignment. It takes about five minutes because it includes fingerprinting. The Rox El PTA covers the $24 cost.
Help with PTA events
Help is always needed. To see what's available, sign up for the PTA email list. There's a lot of variety in what you can do. Some examples:
The Village
The Village coordinates volunteers for individual classrooms. Teachers specify what they need and when they need it. Volunteers do things like help a student with reading, math, and writing or help with classroom projects. Anyone with a valid background check can volunteer: Grandparents, members of neighborhood churches, college students, retired firefighters... Interested in volunteering with the Village? Special Committees
A lot of of the heavy lifting is done by Special Committees. Special Committees are flexible, created on an "as needed" basis. Generally, every major event (e.g., Multicultural Night), service (e.g., school directory), and effort (e.g., chocolate bar sales) gets a committee chair and members to share the work. The best way to get involved in the many Special Committees is to attend PTA meetings. If that's not possible, email roxelpta@gmail.com to express your interest. The list below will give you a sense of what the jobs are!
Become Part of PTA Leadership
The PTA is always looking for fresh faces and new ideas. The terms follow the school calendar from July to June of the following calendar year, and the nominating and voting process happens the preceding May. If you are interested in being nominated for an Executive Committee position or being named to a position (such as the Chair of a special committee), talk to the current leadership about what's involved. You might also want to request and read the bylaws to learn how the organization works. We value and appreciate your interest and involvement. You must be a member of the PTA to volunteer for a position and to vote in elections.
